Shrinking Violet

What is the origin of this particular saying???

Has anyone got a clue???

Somebody asked a related question in February; click the link below for it and its answer. Nobody posted much about it. I'm guessing that shy people are called s.v.'s because the violet is a delicate flower--it wilts easily and bruises easily.
