Church key

As a kid, we used to call our can/bottle openers -- the kind that are sharp on one end for cans and rounded on the other for bottles -- church keys. Does anyone know where that term came from?

I understood it to be an ironical allusion to the frequent use of that kind of opener on beer cans.
