Cowardly Custard

Does anyone know where the origin of "Cowardly Custard" Came from? All I can probably say is that is British, but I'm not entirely certain.

It is British - early 19th century. The phrase is 'cowardy custard' and probably originated in children's games. Noel Coward took it up as the name of a theatrical review late in his career.
