Where does the saying "I wouldn't do that for a big clock" come from?

It was once the habit in large firms to award people a clock when they retired after a lengthy service. A lifetime's service earned a 'big' clock - usually something the person could never have afforded to get themselves otherwise. So a big clock was seen as a major reward or incentive.
