Pass the mustard

It would be appreciated if anyone can tell me the origin of the phrase "pass the mustard" in relation to changing an unsavory topic!

I've never heard it. But I am guessing that its origin would be the dinner table. When the talk isn't good dinner-time conversation, someone might say "pass the mustard" to interrupt and redirect. It could be one of those secret family codes.
