Mad as a box of frogs

Anyone know where "mad as a box of frogs" comes from?

I've never heard it, but I like it. I'll check in my references and see if there's an origin. Sounds like a companion to "crazy as a rat in a can." (More polite than "crazy as a sh*thouse rat.")
