Sweet as a Nut

I know what it means but where does it come from...

I don't know any sweet nuts (Sugared almonds are sweet but they are coated in sweetness and not naturally sweet)

Someone please help... We've been racking outr brains about this one!!!

In nature nuts are sweet - in comparison with many other foods. Prior to the introduction of refined sugar the only really sweet thing was honey. Next down the line were fruits, berries and some nuts, eg chestnut - hence the expression.
