Know by heart

Can anyone here tell me why we use the phrase "Know it by heart?" - - We were having this discussion here at work and no one seems to know.

This probably comes from the time where the heart was thought to be the thinking organ-the phrase 'known by brain' or 'known by mind' never caught on.
