As long as Pat stayed in the army

My mother used to say about anything that she thought was fly-by-night in nature: "It won't last as long as Pat stayed in the army." Or, sarcastically, "That ought to last as long as Pat stayed in the army."
I'm assuming it was an anti-Irish saying, insinuating that Pat (any Irish male) was unreliable and/or a bum.
