Got the hots

When did the prhase "got the hots," as in being sexually attracted to someone, originate?

The variation of this that I've seen actually refers to someone being physically attractive and is often used as a form of flattery.

Example: "You've got the hots, my dear."

I would also be interested to know where all of these temperature-related terms arose.
