As sweet as a nut
I was told many years ago by my now deceased father that the phrase "As sweet as a nut" originated from a very reliable and 'sweet' running motorcycle called a 'Newcastle Upon Tyne' or NUT, hence anything that ran well was was known to be "As sweet as a NUT". If this is the genuine origin of the expression, I have no idea! But if nothing else it gives "Food for thought".
I think that the expression is much older than motorcycles!
