Lost the room

Someone asked me about the meaning of the expression "lost the room", which I've never heard before. I guessed that it means to lose one's audience, but I've not been able to confirm that. And in some sports references, it seems to imply that someone has lost their control over a group of persons. Any help would be appreciated!
