Has anyone else ever heard the phrase, "we grow too soon old, and too late smart"? It was on an old clay tape dispenser that my father had.

I've not heard that one, but it contains the same idea as the old French proverb "Si jeunesse savait, si vieillesse pouvait!" meaning "If only youth knew! If only old age could!" (VSD)
