Dropping like flies

Just searched "dropping like flies" because today is exceptionally warm (50 in Gorham, Maine on 1/1/11) and although a large number of flies have shown up in my apartment, they are falling dead from the ceiling through no action of mine. Thought someone might like to know as that phrase doesn't list an exact derivation. Maybe a weather-related phenomenon?
