Thick as Itchell

He used it in relationship to people being close. Could you tell me if there is such a saying and if so what was its origin?

It is a saying -- your grandfather said it. But I couldn't find the phrase or "Itchell" in any of my references. (I did find "thick as fiddlers in hell.") Could Itchell be a vine or other plant?
