Crazier than a Bessie Bug

Being born and raised in the South - all my life I have heard the phrase "Crazier than a Bessie Bug". Yet to my knowledge I have never seen a "Bessie Bug". My father, whose mother was named Bessie, said in his family it was said "Crazier than a BETSY Bug"
