Drinking whiskey before dinner...

I heard a saying "Drinking whiskey before dinner is a sign of weakness." What can you tell me about the origin? Thank you.

I imagine it is a reference to the idea that to drink alcohol before an arbitrary time is somehow an indication of weakness in that one can't control one's intake.
