Okey

In Raymond Chandler's 1940 novel, "Farewell, My Lovely", Phillip Marlowe uses the term 'okey' as we would use 'okay'. The word 'okay' appears nowhere in the entire novel. I understand that OK is an older phrase than 'okey' or 'okey dokey', but why do you suppose Chandler would use this term rather than 'okay?
