As cold as a flugen

My grandmother, that would be well over 120 if still living, used to say, "It is cold as a flugen today" or "It is cold as flugens." I always wondered what a flugen was?

Believe it or not, that phrase has come up before. Flugens = hell, the dickens, tarnation. See the archives: www.phrases.org.uk bulletin_board 59 messages 223.html
