Sold your piano?

Did people once keep shaving razors inside pianos? I'm looking for background to a reference or joke an older man made to me. Specifically, he asked if I had sold my piano, inside which I would keep my razor, as an explanation for why I hadn't shaved my face that day. It was said in jest, and I don't think that he's simply crazy.
