Cold as a wedge
Cold as a wedge.
I heard this one from my mother all my life, and couldn't find anyone else who had heard it. I have done internet searches and searches through phrase books over the years, without results. Now, all of a sudden, I find your commentary from February 22 - and a number of other references as well. Thanks
The commentary to which she refers was by Graham Cambray. (Where the heck is he these days?) See:

Judging from what Cambray found, the expression was popular in the last half of the 19th century, and obviously beyond (e.g, Susan's mother). The wedge is obviously the tool known as a wedge, still used by those who work with wood.
