Give it some wellie

Any ideas where the expression 'give it some wellie!' originated - I believe it was from wellington boot throwing competitions - too use maximum energy. But I'm not sure

I am not sure either, but I think it more likely that it comes from the fact that a 'welly/wellie' (Wellington Boot) is an item of footwear, and thus is related to phrases like 'put your foot down': to apply pressure with the foot, so increasing speed.
