My Australian grandfather used to say that I looked like "a dying duck in a thunderstorm" when I was grumpy or moping. None of my American friends ever heard this phrase so I was wondering if it was from the UK?

I don't know if it originated in the UK, but it's certainly very common here. Although I've always heard it used of someone who is acting despairing and helpless, rather than just grumpy. (VSD)
