: Can any one tell me where the term "Dig in" comes from? While where are asking for terms...does anyone also know what a Hoya is? As in Georgetown's Hoyas? If anyone can help me with either I would really appreciate it!

I guess that it originally related to troops 'digging in' the earth in order to protect themselves from enemy attack. Such 'digging in' produced 'foxholes' - the term used in WW2 to describe these shallow shelters. However, like many phrases, this one could well have taken on different connotations in different cultures!
