: There was an amusing song (from the '40s perhaps) called "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens." I don't know if the phrase predates the song, but the song did reach a level of popularity that made it quotable for decades. (This is the sort of thing that Bruce Kahl does better than anybody. He probably can find the lyrics.) Stay tuned.

Here's a guess: could it refer to the fox (or weasel) in the hen house? The predator saying, "Ain't nobody here but us chickens."
