"Peanut Gallery"

Can anyone tell me where the phrase "No comment from the peanut gallery" originated. Why Peanut gallery?

The old U.S. children's television show Howdy Doody (with Buffalo Bob) had a Peanut Gallery. If memory serves, that's where the audience sat. I don't know if that's the original Peanut Gallery or not. Anyone?
