Stop throwing yout hat away

My grandma and grandpa always said to us when we fussed or got upset about something to "Stop Throwing Your Hat Away". My mom always said it and I said it with my kids. Has anyone ever heard of this saying?

No. But I've seen a lot of old movies -- from when men wore hats -- where a man would get mad, snatch his hat off his head and throw it down. Maybe that's the origin.
