It will all end in tears

Can someone please tell me, what is the origin of 'It will all end in tears'...? Thank you.

It's just something mothers, grannies and nannies say when children start a game or other ploy that's bound to end with somebody blubbering. Simple as that. (My mother, from SE England, used to say "It'll end in a cry...") (VSD)

"There'll be tears before bed time" was my family's preferred version.
