What is the origin of the phrase "choose your battles"

If by origin, you mean who first coined the maxim, I can offer no information. What it obviously means is that you will do better to shun battles except the ones you know are important or necessary to your cause, battles which, if won, will benefit you the most. And obviously you should shun battles which are not winnable.
