Man Up

"Man Up" has become very popular lately. Meaning seems to relate to a man who steps up and takes responsibility for something; or one who needs to be brave in a given situation. Do you know it's origin?

I've heard "cowboy up." And, for women, (obviously) "put on your big girl panties."
