Paint your bum black

Has anyone heard of the expression "paint your bum black and go mad"? I say it at work and they think I have made it up. An Irish friend of mine used to say it.

I am in the United States and I've never heard that expression. But now that I have, I'm afraid I'm going to have to find an occasion to use it. (A hazard of reading this board.)
