I stumbled upon the phrase while reading the net comic "Order of the Stick" and was wondering what it actually refers to? I'm not aware of it having any non-literal meaning, but it really feels odd in the context so I'm guessing I'm missing something.

Wikipedia has an entry. It says stick figures are used in the comic. Is that the origin?
