Some day you eat the bear

I'm curious as to the etymology and intended meaning of the whimsical phrase "Some Days You Eat the Bear and Some Days the Bear Eats You"

You can't always be the winner. The sun don't shine on the same dog's a** every day. Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue. And so forth.
