Flat ass

I'm looking for the origin of the phrase "flat ass" as in "flat a** calm".

I've not heard this phrase. Having thus confessed my total ignorance, I'm going to guess that "flat a** calm" is a riff on "flat calm," as in, say, no waves, real or figurative, "ass" being thrown in to provide color. Or I'm completely wrong.
