Gripped with fear

I'm looking for the origin of the phrases "gripped with fear" and "shattered dreams".

I don't think they have a single known origin at all. They are obvious natural metaphors. (VSD)

Except that, in my experience, one is more likely to hear "gripped by fear," or "in the grip of fear," than "gripped with fear."
