Gong Show

What exactly does the phrase/saying "Gong Show" mean? I've been trying to figure it out, but haven't gotten anywhere. Hopefully someone can help me out here?

The Gong Show was a variety show/contest show where amateur acts (singers, quite often) would perform before a panel of judges. When their wailing became intolerable, a gong would sound and the contestant's time was up. Find more at en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/The_Gong_Show
