What does the phrase it is better to light a candle than to curse darkness means?

Doing something to improve one's bad situation is better than being angry and complaining. ~rb

"It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness." With some variation, this has been attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, to Gandhi and to Confucius. But the winner, in numerical superiority, is "Old Chinese Proverb."
