Sheepish grin

Does anybody know the origin of the term "sheepish grin?"

Look up "sheepish" in a dictionary, printed of inline, e.g. here: www.thefreedictionary.com/ sheepish.
I think the word got that meaning simply because sheep do have silly embarrassed-looking faces. (VSD)
