Why is the room backstage of theatre for example known as "the green room"?

Michael Quinion has investigated this for "World Wide Words," his Website. He says: "Why it should be called a green room is a minor mystery." However, he points out that the term was in use in the theatres used for Restoration drama, probably not too differently from its use today.
