Bringing home the silver

Does anyone know the source of the saying "Bringing home the silver" in regards to shooting competitions?

Medals awarded in many sports competitions, including Olympic shooting, are as follows:

1st place = gold
2nd place = silver
3rd place = bronze

"Bringing home the silver" means to come in second.
