Fits like a sock on a rooster

My Grandpa used to say "It fits like a sock on a rooster". I guess this means it doesn't fit well but what do you think?

I'm sure that's what it means. There are similar sayings from all over the world. There is a Russian saying "It fits like a saddle on a cow" with exactly the same meaning. Where did your grandpa come from?
