Why don't you put some ice on it

I would like to learn the meaning of the following expression I recently heard in a television show: "Why don't you put some ice on it"

Please let me know if someone can define this phrase.

Putting ice on an injury, such as a bump on the head, relieves some of the pain and helps the swelling go down.
