Toodle-oo,

Posted by Uncle Mort on November 28, 2005

Toodle-oo, Toodle-pip. I think the first is a corruption of the French "A tout a l'heure", literally 'just on the hour' but really meaning "goodbye for now", "See you later" etc. My guess is that the expression 'toodle-pip' is the of the same derivation but modified when the Greenwich time signal was introduced to mark the hour.
Anyone have any other suggestions or confirmation?
