Waving her wooden leg

I would like to know the origin of the following phrase:

""Too late, too late", she cried, waving her wooden leg."

I've seen it being used to denote an action which is performed too late to take effect.

If you Google it, you can find examples of each phrase, but not together. Lots of examples of "waving her wooden leg." SS
