Where did '**** and two are eight' come from/what does it mean?

Wow! I have not heard that expression in at least 50 years--my father expressed it quite frequently--particularly when he cut the wood incorrectly--a carpenter he was not! I thought it was just something that he made up. I'm curious to see the answers to your post.
