Three on the tree

Anyone have any idea what "four on the floor" refers too?

"Four on the floor" refers to the gears and gear shift in a manual transmission car as opposed to an automatic transmission. Four gears with the shifter on the floor as opposed to the shifter "on the column" which have to be manually shifted using a clutch. I hope that helps. SR

"Three on the tree" is a companion phrase referring to a transmission with three forward speeds, where the shifter is on the steering column.
