A fit of backing

Posted by Shae on January 29, 2005

The landlord in my local pub used this expression this evening. I had never heard it before. 'A fit of backing' describes a person who, having had a lot to drink, sways backwards and attempts to retain balance by taking a step backwards which necessitates another step backwards followed by several more in quick succession until the person splats against a wall and falls to the floor.
