Bound and determined

Any ideas on the origin of being 'bound and determined?'

I am away from my library right now. But I wanted to comment that while the phrase is familiar from my West Virginia childhood, I haven't heard anyone use that expression recently.

I knew someone from Vermont who often used the phrase.

My Mother from New Jersey also uses it. But I haven't heard it recently, either. I recall it being used in the context of a child being "bound and determined" to get at the cookie jar, and things like that.
