Don't tell me

Since when do we say don't tell me......when we mean -- tell me more.

Who's the "we" who says that? I don't. When I say "don't tell me", it's when I'm trying to find a word that's "on the tip of my tongue" and I want the satisfaction of thinking of it myself.
