To pop the cork=Is that something you do when you want open champaigne or drinks in glass?

Originally, yes. However, it has become somewhat extended (no pun intended!) to mean to become overly excited. How can I put this delicately. If you think of what happens when a bottle of Champagne is uncorked and then imagine a (male) human physiological action which roughly resembles it, you will be getting close!
